MOANA 2 & THE LIVE-ACTION REMAKE: A NEW WAVE FOR DISNEY’S POLYNESIAN HEROINE
Disney’s Moana 2 made waves when it premiered in November 2024, continuing the adventures of the brave Polynesian voyager. Meanwhile, the studio is preparing a live-action remake of the original Moana, set to release on July 10, 2026. Together, these projects mark a new era for one of Disney’s most beloved modern heroines.
MOANA 2: THE VOYAGE CONTINUES
Release and Reception
Moana 2 debuted in theaters in late 2024 and quickly became a global success. The film brought audiences back to the Pacific Ocean, celebrating culture, courage, and community.
Story and Themes
The sequel follows Moana as she sets out on a new journey to explore distant, uncharted waters. She reunites with Maui and meets new allies as she seeks to understand her ancestors’ wayfinding traditions. Themes of identity, legacy, and self-discovery remain at the heart of the story, reminding viewers that courage and curiosity still guide Moana’s spirit.
Visuals and Music
With stunning animation, breathtaking ocean landscapes, and a powerful musical score, Moana 2 continues Disney’s tradition of blending heartwarming storytelling with visual splendor.
MOANA (2026): THE LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION
Development and Direction
The live-action Moana was announced in 2023, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returning as Maui and serving as a producer. The film is directed by Thomas Kail, best known for directing the stage and screen versions of Hamilton. Originally planned for a 2025 release, it was later postponed to July 10, 2026, allowing more time for production and refinement.
Cast and Characters
A new talent, Catherine Laga‘aia, has been chosen to portray Moana, bringing fresh energy to the role. John Tui will play Chief Tui, Frankie Adams will take on the role of Sina, and Rena Owen will appear as Gramma Tala. Auli‘i Cravalho, the original voice of Moana, will not reprise her role but will remain involved as an executive producer to help ensure authenticity and cultural respect.
Filming and Production
Filming took place in Hawaii and Atlanta during 2024, capturing both the beauty of the islands and the spirit of adventure that defines the Moana story. The production team has promised to balance realistic settings with the magic and mythology that fans remember from the original.
Music and Creative Team
The film’s music will feature contributions from Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda, both returning from the original animated film. Their work will blend Polynesian sounds with Broadway-style compositions, aiming to create an emotionally resonant and cinematic experience.

EXPECTATIONS AND CHALLENGES
Turning an animated masterpiece into live action is no easy task. Audiences expect the new Moana to honor Polynesian culture while offering something visually and emotionally new. The film must balance realism with the fantastical elements—such as Maui’s transformations and the living ocean—that made the 2016 version so iconic.
Disney’s decision to release Moana 2 before the live-action remake creates an interesting dynamic: the sequel expands the story, while the 2026 remake reimagines how it began. Both projects reflect Disney’s commitment to revisiting its recent classics through innovation and cultural appreciation.
