The film opens with McCall seemingly retired in South America, quietly helping an oppressed community. But a tragic encounter with a young victim draws him back into violence. Denzel Washington delivers a performance of brutal restraint, a whirlwind of serenity and fury, embodying a man who knows that every murder leaves a part of himself behind. The visual direction, by Antoine Fuqua, is darker, more mature, and more stylized than ever, with urban landscapes that evoke cages of steel and blood.
One of the greatest strengths of this installment lies in its more personal approach. McCall battles not only the villains, but also his own inner demons. The script explores his military past, revealing previously unspoken secrets and connecting the events of the first film. His silences are charged with emotion; a constant shadow in his gaze shows that this hero doesn’t save himself with each act of justice, but rather descends into the abyss of an impossible redemption.
The action sequences are absolutely spectacular: brutal, stylish, and perfectly choreographed. Each confrontation is a deadly dance that reflects McCall’s clinical precision and unwavering moral code. In a key scene set in a deserted, rain-soaked train station, the silence before the explosion is as tense as the fight itself. Action cinema elevated to an almost poetic level.
The villain, played by Javier Bardem, is a formidable antagonist. More than a criminal, he is an ideological figure who challenges McCall on philosophical and ethical grounds. His screen presence is magnetic, providing a perfect counterpoint to our protagonist’s silence and determination. The final duel between the two is not only physical but also spiritual, keeping the viewer on the edge of their seat.
The Equalizer 4 isn’t just a brilliant action film; it’s also a study in justice, guilt, and redemption. It’s a powerful conclusion to the saga, but it also leaves the door ajar just enough for the McCall myth to live on. If this is indeed his final trial, it will be remembered as a judgment written in blood.
